A cube containing a concrete sculpture evocative of a piddock's home. It symbolises future and past, and life in between. Part of the Moon Gallery.
All life on Earth is a product of millions of years of trial by nature that has manifested itself as different forms. Life is made by a continuous turning of events, all of which has brought us to this point where humans live on Earth much like a snail abides in its shell. We sense this freedom that we have to move around, that is to say not grounded like a tree, but on a larger scale, we are still bound to this planet much like a mollusk is bound to its shell. A primitive instinct to sustain, to evolve and continue, has us looking to the Moon and beyond for new habitats.
The proposed cube has a hole cut into it in the shape of a cone and is evocative of a piddock’s home. There is a narrower end and a wider opening which symbolizes the future and the past respectively, and the dynamic process of life in between. It is as though we have to trace our steps backwards in order to look to the future. The piddock’s home is an absence that talks about a presence. These tiny creatures leave marks of their existence, long after they are gone.
The water ice in the craters on the moon is a trace of what existed long before us. In our quest for habitats beyond Earth, we follow our memories, we follow the forms that were left as traces, clues to what used to be and what can be. Additionally, one can also look through the wider end of the cone and spot the moon at the other end.
