Imaginary Futures
I will be...
2022
unknown, cutout shapes

status:
A collective artwork containing symbols and images that represent a wish or aspiration for the future. The shapes embody a new script of imaginings.
For the past 5 years the Imaginary Futures project has been gathering stories and projecting future ideas from creatives – most of which have not had a chance to voice their experiences and views. The creative sessions started off in the form of an interactive planetarium show and eventually grew into an online immersive experience programme connecting unlikely collaborators and unearthing new narratives and speculations around our unknown future.
The activities can be found under imaginaryfutures.org
I will be … is an attempt at a collective statement with Imaginary Futures participants form South Africa to capture different symbols and simple images that represent a wish or aspiration for the future. In this sense the resulting simple shapes start to embody a new script of imaginings.
The cutout shapes are accompanied by reference words submitted by the participants:
Brave /water / voice / health / food / connection / touch / breath / kin / discovery / circle of life / impermanence / freedom / peace / growth / nature / light
The symbols and words were both submitted for the Moon Gallery artwork, but also collected from workshops over the past years by the following participants:
Aja Marneweck / Ciara Struwig / Elrico Plaatjies / Manzikazi Scota / Mark Edwards / Mariette Erwee / Miné Kleynhans / Nataniël Pokwas / Ofentse Letebele / Paul Setate / Perseverance Mavuso / Reginald Milanzi / Reitumetse Lebatla / Selanvor Platjies / Sifiso Teddy Mhlambi / Sylvia Kalane / Thulisile Princess Binda / Violet Isaacs / Wayne Reddiar / Wendy Menong / Xolisile Bongwana / Zanda Nosenga / Marcus Neustetter
